311 – HRM’s Call Centre
HRM’s call centre is open 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-5:30pm weekends to respond to routine inquiries and complaints from HRM residents. Please use this service since it helps HRM keep track of issues that are of concern for residents (missed solid waste pickup, sidewalks not cleared, transit info or complaints, etc.) For more information please visit http://www.halifax.ca/311/

HRM Meetings/Updates

Gottingen Street transit priority bus lane – Road Construction

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents and motorists that construction for the Gottingen Street northbound transit priority bus lane and streetscaping enhancements will begin Oct 10th Construction will take place on Gottingen Street between Cogswell and North streets. The project is expected to take eight weeks to complete.

Crews will be on site Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Two-lane traffic and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Local businesses will remain open and accessible to pedestrians.

Starting tomorrow, there will be no parking day or night on the west side (northbound) of Gottingen Street between Cogswell and North streets. Permanent no-parking signs will be installed.

Upon installation, the Gottingen Street transit priority lane will run northbound from the intersection of Cogswell Street to the intersection of North Street weekdays from 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is seeking volunteers for various Regional Council advisory boards and committees. Residents interested in having a voice in the municipal advisory committee process, while helping their community, are encouraged to apply for these opportunities no later than Sunday, Oct. 21st, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.

Curbside Give Away Weekend

Oct. 13th & 14th is Curbside give away weekend! Put out your unwanted household items out during Curbside Give Away Weekend instead of discarding them. It’s a great way to reduce the amount of garbage ending up in the landfill, while letting someone else find something new.

Cannabis and smoking in Halifax

Recreational cannabis will be legalized on Oct. 17th, 2018 and changes are happening at all levels of government to address its legalization. Smoking and vaping of both tobacco and cannabis will be prohibited on all municipal property, except in designated areas. By-Law N-304 (Respecting Smoking), will be effective as of Oct. 15, 2018.

The municipality is in the process of identifying the locations of some designated smoking areas on municipal property. In the coming days, prior to Oct. 15 when the new by-law amendments are enacted, an online map will be posted with the locations.

Weekly green cart collection ended Friday, September 28th

The Halifax Regional Municipality is reminding residents that summer weekly green cart collection ended on Friday, Sept. 28th.

Weekly curbside green cart collection service is provided to all residents during the months of July, August and September.  Green cart collection will return to the regular two-week green cart/garbage collection schedule on Monday, Oct. 1.

For regular organics green cart and garbage collection schedules, residents should refer to the ‘What Goes Where’ mobile and web-based app at www.halifax.ca/whatgoeswhere or call 311.

Neighbourhood Placemaking Applications due Oct 30th

Neighbourhood Placemaking provides guidance and support to community members interested in hosting a project in their neighbourhood. This could be painting an intersection, building of benches for a local gathering place, planting a community garden, or any idea that brings together community members to create public art that activates shared public spaces to create a sense of place and build a sense of community

2018 Volunteer Conference

Registration for the 18th annual Volunteer Conference is now open, with special early bird rates available until Friday, October 26th. The conference, which offers a wide selection of interactive and informative workshops, provides residents with an opportunity to participate in training, networking and learning opportunities – all designed to help people become more effective in their work and strengthen the volunteer capacity of the municipality. This year’s keynote speaker is the Honourable Joanne Bernard, ECNS, President and CEO of Easter Seals Nova Scotia.

Motion: That Halifax and West Community Council:

  1. Approve the proposed development agreement, which shall be substantially of the same form as set out in Attachment B of the staff report dated June 21, 2018; and
  2. Require that the development agreement be signed by the property owner within 120, or any extension thereof granted by Council on request of the property owner, from the date of final approval by Council and any other bodies as necessary, including applicable appeal periods, whichever is later; otherwise this approval will be void and obligations arising hereunder shall be at an end.
