Demolition Work HMCS Dockyard Town Hall – Nov. 9
With the construction of the Jetty for the new Artic and Offshore Patrol Vessel, and with the influx of daily calls around the demolition that takes place every afternoon at the Dockyards. The Base has decided to hold a town hall scheduled on November 9th at 6:30pm at the Ward 5 Community Centre 5540 Russell St. Construction experts from Ottawa will be in attendance to answer any questions residents may have.

Volunteering on Municipal Boards and Committees Information Session – Nov. 9
HRM is looking for residents to sit on a variety of committees and boards including Library Board, Grants Committee, Accessibility Committee, Halifax Water, District 7&8 Planning Advisory Committee, Active Transportation Committee among others.  An information session will be held on Wednesday, November 9 at Halifax City Hall, 1841 Argyle Street at 7 p.m.  Deadline for applications is Nov. 14.  For further info on applications process and positions available go to:  http://www.halifax.ca/boardscom/volunteer.php

Please join to celebrate one year of collaboration, community support, and youth empowerment. Future Roots is a Social Enterprise in North End Halifax that employs youth ages 14-19, and provides quality assistance to North End residents.

Bikeway Connector Project Public and Online engagement sessions Nov 16 & 17
The Bikeway Connector Project will develop and assess the feasibility, land requirements, and cost of specific options that improve connections between the Macdonald Bridge bikeway and bicycle networks in Halifax and Dartmouth.
As part of the planning process, public engagement sessions will be hosted on November 16 and 17, 2016 to provide information and receive feedback on the preliminary design options.

Adsum House Annual Open House – Nov. 17
Join them on November 17th from 11:30pm – 2:00pm for wonderful chowder, soup and sweets. They will be presenting a report on their activities and giving a tour of the emergency shelter. Special guests will speak about developments in their work to end homelessness and create affordable housing and supports. Special presentation by TD Bank and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Fort Needham Memorial Park Master Plan Open House – Nov. 17
The Fort Needham Memorial Park Open House will be held on Thursday, November 17 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Alexander McKay Elementary.  This event is an opportunity to see the master plan that was approved by Council and to provide comments to staff.

Annual Holiday Market organized by the North End Business Association will be on Sat. Halifax Explosion Community Grants Program Deadline – Nov. 30
The purpose of the Halifax Explosion 100th Anniversary Grants Program is to further the Municipal Commemorative Program through the provision of grants to community-based projects that commemorate the centennial by:
• honoring the memory of those who died and suffered as a result of the explosion;
• recognizing the provision of compassionate aid;
• educating current and future generations about the significance of the event; and
• celebrating the resilience of persons and institutions.
Projects funded under this program will enhance public awareness of the disaster’s enduring impact on the region’s development and character from different perspectives in a manner that has a demonstrated impact.  The Program officially opened for applications Thursday, September 1st, 2016 with the application deadline on Wednesday, November 30th, 2016.  For further information on the sessions and the program go to: http://www.halifax.ca/HalifaxExplosion/index.php

Centre Plan Complete Draft Comment Deadline – Dec 2
One of the most important documents that will affect District 8 has been released in draft form – please review carefully since the Centre Plan when approved by Regional Council, will set the direction for how our neighbourhoods and community will grow and develop.  Here is the link to the draft:

District 8 Development Proposals (Cousin’s Restaurant, Robie, Agricola & United Memorial Church) Open House – Dec 7
There will be a public meeting on Dec 7 at the Atlantica Hotel, 1980 Robie St., that will review current Planning Application Requests and their relationship with the current status of the Centre Plan.  There are a total of 4 project applications under consideration in District 8 including the following:

  • 4 lots at corner of Robie and Duffus including Cousin’s Restaurant, Needs Corner store for 6 storey building (see #1)
  • Robie St between Compton and Cunard for 13 storey building (see #10)
  • West side of Agricola Street, mid-block between West and Charles Streets for 5 storey building (see #11)
  • former United Memorial Church site on Kaye St for 7 storey building (see #13)
This meeting will be conducted in an open house format, where the public can drop-in to provide feedback on the proposal at any time between the hours of 12-2pm and 6-8pm. At the open house, each development proposal will be presented within the context of the proposed Centre Plan policy.  For further info on the applications and staff contact info go to:

HomeWarming Program for Low Income Residents to Improve Energy Efficiency
HomeWarming is a program that helps Nova Scotians living on a low income save money on heating and cooling bills and feel more comfortable year-round – your home will be assessed and complete energy efficiency upgrades done at no charge. Clean Foundation and Efficiency Nova Scotia are working together to offer income-qualified homeowners these free efficiency improvements.  Interested homeowners can speak confidentially with a Service Advisor about their eligibility by calling 1-877-434-2136 (toll free) or by visiting HomeWarming.ca

Neighbourhood Placemaking Program
Neighbourhood Placemaking provides guidance and support to community members interested in hosting a project in their neighbourhood. This could be intersection painting, the building of benches for a local gathering place, a community garden, or any idea that brings together community members to create public art that activates shared public spaces to give a sense of place and build community.  The program provides staff support and resources.  For more info on the application process and toolkit go to: http://www.halifax.ca/culture/communityarts/placemaking.php

HRM’s call centre is open 7 days/week from 7 am to 11 pm (except Christmas Day & New Years Day) to respond to routine inquiries and complaints from HRM residents.
